Black women in rap videos?
Why is it that when discussing hip hop videos, it's "degrating" and "disrespectful" for black women to shake their rumps and use sexual body language, but when watching an episode of Girls Gone Wild, Playboy, or mainstream porno exposing and using white women's bodies it is not (generally) "degrating" for them? Why hasn't anyone defended the majority yet?
Public Comments
- no need
- as a bi racial women and in this business, i really dont think its degrating.... Those women CHOOSE to do those videos and if thats what they want to do...then do it..MORE POWER TO THEM! from porn to music videos....white black purple it really dont matter.....no one holds a gun to thier head and makes them do those things so I think really people need to stop b*tchin about it and realize that this thier personal choice not forced.
- its not degrading
- The black women you are talking about are in popular culture, something which children and 'middle class whites' are exposed to. The white women you are talking about are in pornography, something that children are generally kept away from, and white middle class people either dont watch, or dont admit to watching. In sociology, white middle class people are often considered to be the first people to complain about something in the media or popular culture. In the 1970s, racist jokes in british tv were considered funny and inocent to both white british and black british people, it was only until white middle class people complained that things started to change, and racism became a touchy subject. Not sure if that answers your question but its just a bunch of comments that sprung to mind.
- It's a double-standard. I've always wondered the SAME thing.
- I think it's because the girls in Playboy etc are usually thought of as belonging to white men (by the types of idiots who think like that, I mean). I'd put money on it that if black rappers started using white women in their videos, there'd be outrage from the moral majority. The sad fact is, that women of any race selling sex instead of brains and talent is seen as perfectly acceptable by a lot of people - especially if it makes money. The difference with rap videos is that, imo, a lot for the people who call them degrading are not so much interested in helping black women, but in making black men look bad. These same people will say nothing about a Motley Crue video because they don't want to perpetrate the myth of the "white threat" as much as they want to perpetrate the bullsh!t myth of the black one.
- This is a good question. Im always put up against older folks that think rap and hip hop is degrating to women, and in some cases and music videos, it is. It takes women in underwear for music videos and cds to sell, or at least thats what its sayin to america. Its pathetic to me that rappers think they need women in thongs to make their video hot. Maybe if they rapped about something worth listening to we wouldnt need half naked, black women all over MTV. And as far as porno and stuff. Theres just as many black and white women on there so you cant just say people defend the white women. People arent defending porno cuz...its porno. Theres no way to defend porn. No one grows up and says "I wanna be a porn star" just like no lil girl grows up saying "I wanna be that naked girl dancing next to 50 cent." I think music needs to change and then the manner of the music videos will change as well.
- music and porn should be two different thing's. that's why people always "shoot there guns" about the rap music now-a-days music has changed such a great deal over time.
- it is degrating in some ways and to be for real if really look at the videos there are white women in these videos doing the same exact thing that blacks women are doing takening off their clothes and dancing around naked. so it is degrating.
- A video hoe, is a video hoe. Not sure what type of videos you watch but I see all races. White, Hispanic, Black, Asian...etc Now as far as G.G.W/Playboy or mainstream porno...they choose to be put in that situation, just like the video hoes! I don't defend none of those females nor will I mock them for getting theirs! Its just so happens most girls in the G.G.W/Playboy or pornos are mostly white.
- A lot of people are IDIOTIC enough to watch these videos and then draw the conclusion that all black women are ***** but those women don't represent ALL black women. These women that CHOOSE to do those videos, (girls gone wild, video hoes, porn, playboy etc.) they're making THEMSELVES and their FAMILIES look bad.
- they are objectifying themselves, bottom line. Don't get me wrong, some of the women are there just to make money to support themselves and/or child, or pay for their education (the video girls). But a lot of the do it cause that is what they want to do, no one is forcing them to do it. The girls gone wild are doing what they like and they are not ashamed at all. SO i think no one is complaining cause either they like it, are a part of it, bebefiting from it, os sees that there is no reason to say anything cause its not going to change (or enough people to protect it).
- Because white women aren't complaining and black women are. No one but black women are saying that its degrading. White women could care less about flashing tits and porno exposing. Black women somewhere down the line end up feeling like they have to justify what they do and why they do it. No one cares! Shake what ya momma gave ya and be proud! hehe
- Because Pamela Anderson or Angelina Jolie or Madonna (for example) are rich, famous, in control and their exposure was more artistic and erotic than pornographic. Besides, that was considered a bit degrading at the time, but now they fixed their reputation Black women, who start in porn stay there by stereotypes because there are virtually no black women who had some "erotic" moments and made it to any elite(Porn(Pamela), Films(Angelina), Music(Madonna)). Also there's a big difference if you are erotic and dominant in your video or obviously a pawn of some narcissistic rapper in a video where even lyrics describe you as an object for one use. Plus, a music video is going to be seen by more people and a more general group than a white/black/other porn. I'm sorry but I can't see how would I respect someone who gets into "sex slavery" for some money and make sexy women appear like expendable items.
- Its degrading period. Its just that if you are not in the white community, you wont discuss them because it really isnt effecting you.
- There is no music anymore, only image Check out my friends; The NaySayers These guys rap about real issues; not blingin and b*tches. http://www.myspace.com/thenaysayersmusic
- You tell em girl! Nice question.
- It is degrading, but porn is alot more concealed than rap videos. It's rarely on television, and kids arent usually watching it. Do the girls in rap videos even really get paid? Litlle kids can easily watch these. You cant tell me it's not basically porn, come on!: http://youtube.com/watch?v=A0HpyRzx3Lo http://youtube.com/watch?v=wn6ca7UhTx4 At about 2:25 this one gets pretty bad
