Hand gestures and body language for different cultures?

Can anyone please tell me if they have any information on what different hand gestures and body language mean for different cultures. E.g. thumbs up in UK means that you mean 'OK' but in the middle east its the same as giving someone the finger!

  1. try this site http://www.ooze.com/finger/html/foriegn.html
  2. when shaking hands with a female and tickling the inside of her palm means you want to sleep with her....I am not sure what nationality this is from...I think possibly filipino...
  3. umm i don't know a site but i DO know that if u create a two headed eagle with your hands by sticking them both out in front of u, turning them around and conjoining them by your thumbs it shows you're albanian. however, in the latino cultures it means that you are gay
  4. Not only different cultures but different parts of the same culture. Where I live in England if you go 15 miles West then people there use their hands very little, if you go the same distance East then the opposite applies. I believe that the Eskimos and Aborigionies have different thgoughts on rubbing your nose. One good and one bad. Sorry, you'll have to do your own research.
  5. hi its me again, just thought i would let you know of another site which gives more insite into more gestures as shown in the list, 1 Using one hand: 1.1 Approximation 1.2 Bang bang 1.3 Beckoning sign 1.4 Benediction and blessing 1.5 Blah-blah 1.6 Check, please 1.7 Clenched fist 1.8 Pound fist 1.9 Clinton thumb 1.10 Crossed fingers 1.11 Cuckoo sign 1.12 Fig sign 1.13 Finger Beside Nose 1.14 Finger Snap 1.15 Hook 'em Horns 1.16 Horns 1.17 The Fangul 1.18 Kodály Hand Signs 1.19 Knocking on wood 1.20 Middle finger 1.21 Money sign 1.22 Moutza (Palm of hand) 1.23 OK 1.24 Pointing 1.25 Salute 1.26 Shaka 1.26.1 Similar gestures 1.27 "Thanks!" These can be found in the Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. There is alot to read but well worth it and very interesting. Amazing what one finds..... as being acceptable to some but quite offensive for others. After reading the passages, I find it is a topic, that is not to be taken so lightly. If I had not read your question, I would have missed out on this. So thank you, for broading my knowledge on such an important aspect of our everyday life. Even I have used hand gestures without real thoughts to it and as a result of it being passed on on to me as a child or the culture we are living in. but now i will be more aware of how i conduct myself in public, so as i don't offend anyone.
  6. A body language book would be your most reliable and best bet.
  7. HSBC advert.
  8. for official hand gestures, try your local deaf association for courses B.S.L. and similarly A.S.L. that is american and british sign language, which even they are slightly different.healthy and happy new year to one and all
  9. In Indian(Asia-India) Schools, if you wanted to signal your teacher that you wanted to go to the bathroom, you would raise your hand and stick the pinky finger out. Just not in school, used in day-to-day life too.
  10. Hope these help
  11. In most of Asia, people beckon 'come here', by holding their palm face down and making small waving getures towards their body. Thumbs up= okay Not covering mouth with hand when laughing (women), yawning, picking teeth, coughing, burping & eating considered highly rude. Generally use your right hand in Asia- the left is for bottom-washing (they favour bidets as opposed to tissue). Making an index-finger only salute across the forehead means a person is crazy (bad brain)- half joking/half insulting. Don't point with feet- very rude. Avoid pointing with index- a sign of poor breeding- point instead with all four fingers like an old-fashioned stop sign. Pointing with fingers is very rude in Japan. In India, when they disagree or are making a point in a heated discussion, commonly women, but men also waggle their index finger ahead of them while making the point ie "You should never have paid that much for a Sari- you are being ripped off again (waggle, waggle)" I can' think of any more sorry- I'm sure there'll be more.
